6-9 Month Baby Clothes Checklist: What Every Parent Needs

on

This age brings with it more exciting milestones - weaning and (potentially) crawling, both huge considerations from a clothing perspective.

Comfort, functionality, and ease of dressing remain key considerations, but as awake windows lengthen and movement increases, many parents find this is a great age to transition to dressing in daytime 'outfits'. Joggers with stretchy waistbands, leggings and dungarees are perfect to mix and match with bodysuits for this more mobile age.

As a mum of two, and founder of a baby clothes business, I’ve learned a few things about dressing babies and young children. Here's my 6-9 month baby clothes checklist and some tips to make it all less daunting.

If you’re looking for an easy and sustainable way to dress your baby, renting baby clothes from Borro can be a lifesaver - especially when you’re not sure what will actually work for your little one.

Quick 6-9 Month Baby Clothes Checklist

  • 5-8 bodysuits and tops (short or long sleeve, depending on the season)
  • 3-5 sleepsuits
  • 8-10 'outfit' items, bottoms, playsuits or rompers (more needed due to weaning. Great for daytime outings)
  • 3 cardigans or jumpers (layers are key for fluctuating weather)
  • Socks and booties or soft soled shoes
  • 1-2 hats (a soft one for indoors and a warmer one for outdoors if it’s cold)
  • 1 snowsuit or pram suit (only if it’s winter)
  • 2 sleeping bags (1.5 tog in summer, 2.5 tog in winter. In very hot weather, a 0.5 tog may be required, or no sleeping bag at all.)

At this age your baby is likely to be making much more mess (the joy of weaning), so you will find their wardrobe needs increase (along with the washing). Start off with the minimum and you can always buy/Borro more if you feel you need to.

6-9 months vs 6-12 months clothes - which size should you get?

When shopping for baby clothes, the first thing to know is that sizing isn’t always consistent across brands. As a general rule 6-9 month clothing will serve you better at the start of this age range, whereas 6-12 months may be a bit roomy to begin with. Many items have adjustable waistbands or buttons at different positions to allow for growth. You can also make small stylings adaptations, such as rolling sleeves and cuffs to make roomier items work. Oversized looks can look very cute, such as pairing a bigger jumper with leggings. Look out for our notes on sizing to tell you how generous the brand is.

Other things to consider for your 6-9 month old

It's likely your baby will be teething (or experiencing some of the early symptoms) at this age. Dribble bibs can be an effective outfit saver, some even come with a chewable silicone part to ease those sore gums.

You may be itching to buy them their first pair of cool trainers. Be mindful of their foot development, and ensure that anything you put on their feet is soft, flexible and has room for growth. In warmer months, little feet are best left uncovered where safe. When shoes are needed, opt for soft ones with grippy flexible soles.

I discovered that white sleepsuits and red pepper do not mix!

Breaking Down the Baby Clothes Basics

While some of the essentials remain a constant, your baby is developing fast. These changes in their sleep patterns and physical development have implications for their clothing so it’s a good time to adjust their wardrobe.

Bodysuits and tops

Many parents continue to use bodysuits, now is also a great time to add more tops to their wardrobes to mix and match with their daywear.

Sleepsuits: Comfort for Night time

Soft, practical, and perfect for sleep. You may prefer footless options when your baby gets on the move.

Daywear

This is a good time to transition from all-in-one styles to outfits. Mix and match tops with comfy bottoms such as leggings, joggers, dungarees and dresses. There are so many adorable options for this age.

Outerwear

Once your baby is sitting confidently, or even crawling! You'll often find they're happier on the ground, exploring the world around them. Accessories such as hats become more essential. Depending on the season, now is a great time to use a puddle or snowsuit to keep them warm and dry on your outings (and also protect their outfit). Look out for flexible footwear to protect their feet when needed, or non slip slipper socks.

What Other Parents Overlook

Getting on the move, and a love of throwing things out of the pram lead to heavy clothing losses at this age. Stock up on socks, and protect their comforter at all costs! We recommend getting a backup (or two) into circulation before they start noticing the difference. Dummy clips can help secure things to the pram.

What I wouldn’t bother with for 6-9 months

Shoes with firm soles

You may be desperate to buy them their first pair of cool trainers, but as a critical time for foot development it's best to ensure anything you put on their feet is soft, flexible and has room for growth. In warmer months, little feet are best left uncovered where safe. When shoes are needed, opt for soft ones with grippy flexible soles.

Hats and headbands

At this age they love to tear off any hat or headband you try and put on!
