Toddler clothes checklist
By Laura Vane, Founder of Tinies & Co
Dressing a toddler is not as simple as keeping them warm or cool (depending on the season) and making them look cute (like dressing a baby), they’ve entered this new phase which requires thinking about some practical things. They are also becoming more independent and wriggly making it even harder to get them dressed in the morning.
Here are a few things to consider that should help to make life a little simpler for you.
1. Keep toddler dressing simple
Avoid complicated outfits with too many buttons, zippers, or clasps. Instead, opt for simple designs with minimal fastenings. Your toddler will be starting to potty train which requires them to pull clothes on and off easily so you should bear this in mind. Simplicity at this stage will also encourage them to start dressing themselves as they grow older and more independent.
2. Choose comfort for your toddler
Toddlers are constantly on the move, exploring the world around them. Opt for soft, stretchy fabrics that allow for unrestricted movement. Comfortable clothing ensures your toddler can play freely without feeling restricted or uncomfortable.
3. Consider your daily activities
While it’s tempting to dress your little one in adorable outfits everyday, my advice is to save those best pieces for parties and special occasions. On a day to day basis choose clothes that are easy to clean and durable enough to withstand the inevitable spills and stains that come with toddlerhood.
4. Involve your toddler
Toddlers love asserting their independence, so why not involve them in the dressing process? Offer them choices between two outfits or let them pick out their own clothes (within reason, of course). This not only encourages their autonomy but also makes them more cooperative during the dressing routine.
5. Layer up
Toddlers are notorious for fluctuating between feeling too hot and too cold. Dress them in layers so you can easily adjust their clothing according to the temperature. Plus, layering items such as puddlesuits allow for easy transitions between indoor and outdoor activities.
6. Don’t forget the shoes
Finding the right pair of shoes for your toddler can be a game-changer. Make sure they fit well, are supportive and easy to put on making it easier for them to do this independently.
7. Be patient!
Above all, patience is key when dressing a toddler. Expect some resistance and tantrums along the way, but try to remain calm and positive. Turn the dressing routine into a fun bonding experience by singing songs, playing games, or offering praise and encouragement.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can make the dressing process easier and more enjoyable for both you and your little one.
