What Baby Clothes Do You Actually NEED?

What Baby Clothes Do You Actually NEED?

Before you have a baby there's a lot of conflicting advice about what clothes you need, and you want to be prepared, right? So best to get it all? Also baby clothes are so cute, it's easy to get carried away. But a few months in you might be surprised by all the stuff you never actually got round to using.

To give you an idea of what clothes you actually need, here's a run down of what a capsule wardrobe looks like for each stage of that first year.

Clothes you need for 0-3 months

Before you have a baby it’s easy to get sucked in with teeny tiny booties and super cute outfits, but you may find that those booties get kicked straight off. Until you’ve figured a few things out, we’d recommend sticking to sleepsuits - the classic and timeless baby outfit! Most sleepsuits (or baby grows) also have integrated scratch mitts at this age so you don’t need to worry about your baby scratching themselves with those sharp fingernails.

0-3 month baby capsule wardrobe
  • 3-5 short sleeve bodysuits
  • 3-5 sleepsuits
  • 1 cardigan
  • 1 hat
  • 1 snowsuit/pramsuit (unless it's summer)
  • 2 sleeping bags

This may seem like a ridiculously small wardrobe, but unless you have a lot of poo explosions or a baby who brings up a lot of milk, these clothes are unlikely to get very dirty. Start off with the minimum and you can always buy/rent more if you feel you need to.

Clothes you need for 3-6 months

At this age your baby might be rolling, sitting, and will be starting to experiment with food. This could mean a lot more outfit changes! And you might be bored of just dressing them in sleepsuits.

3-6 month baby capsule wardrobe
  • 2 long sleeve bodysuits
  • 2 trousers
  • 2 jumpers/cardigans
  • 1 dress/dungarees
  • 3-5 short sleeve vests
  • 3-5 sleepsuits
  • 1 hat
  • 1 snowsuit/pramsuit
  • 2 sleeping bags

Top tips for 3-6 month clothes:

  • Stick with bodysuits rather than t-shirts or tops which can ride up and expose that little tummy to the cold.
  • Many babies don’t love things going over their heads, so you might find cardigans easier than jumpers, although there are all those buttons…!
  • Some dresses can ride up on babies this age when they’re just sat down or rolling around, so try soft stretchy ones rather than anything too tight or with straps.

Clothes you need for 6-9 months

It’s weaning time! This means a) a lot more outfit changes, and/or b) you need to invest in a good bib - we’d recommend something with long sleeves that can go in the washing machine!

6-9 month baby capsule wardrobe
  • 3 short/long sleeve bodysuits
  • 3 trousers
  • 3 jumpers/cardigans
  • 1 dress/dungarees
  • 3 sleepsuits
  • 1 hat
  • 1 snowsuit/pramsuit
  • 2 sleeping bags

Top tips for 6-9 month clothes:

  • If your baby is crawling a lot, beware of dresses which can get caught round their knees and make it tricky for them to move.
  • To prevent staining, just wipe any spills asap with a damp cloth. This is much quicker and easier than taking all their clothes off and rinsing them or washing them straight away, and almost as effective!

Clothes you need for 9-12 months

Your baby is probably crawling and maybe even trying to walk now. You might find that integrated feet in sleepsuits just trip them up, so check whether sleepsuits at this age have them if your baby likes to walk around. Or just try PJs instead if you feel ready to say goodbye to the babygrows!

  • 9-12 month baby capsule wardrobe
2 short/long sleeve bodysuits depending on weather

  • 2 t-shirts/long sleeve tops
  • 3 trousers
  • 3 jumpers/cardigans
  • 2 dress/dungarees
  • 3 sleepsuits/PJs
  • 1 hat
  • 1 coat
  • 2 sleeping bags

If they are walking a bit, this is a super cute age for dresses which will finally sit properly now.

Why Borro clothes?

Renting means less waste, more wardrobe flexibility and no more piles of outgrown clothes. It’s a smarter, more sustainable way to dress your little ones.

With Borro, you get high-quality kidswear without the commitment, just what you need, when you need it. Helping you save time, save money, and save the planet.

What about stains?

Don't panic! Let us worry about the stains. Stain insurance is included. Obviously it's best to prevent stains if you can, or treat them as soon as possible. But we will never charge you.

If the garment can't be saved, it will be upcycled or recycled. Nothing ever goes to landfill, and we'll never charge you.

Subscription & exchanges

Subscription

All the clothes are individually priced and there's no minimum amount or set subscription - we're flexible!

Rent as many/few things as you like and you'll see at checkout what your monthly subscription will be. (If you want us to pick out a coordinated bundle of 10 items for you, it's £29/month).

Exchanges

We know little ones grow as fast as the weather changes! You don't need to return your previous order to order new clothes, so simply send back items whenever you no longer have a need for them, and add any new items to your subscription, by adding them to your basket and checking out.

Delivery & returns

Delivery

Your order will be packed and dispatched the next working day. Delivery takes 2-3 working days.

Returns

Pop them inside the bag/box they came in, attach the free pre-paid returns label, then drop off at your nearest Evri ParcelShop.

We only include one pre-paid returns label per order, so if you choose to send just some of an order back and the rest later, you will need to pay for the postage of the second return.

Once we've received your items we will amend your subscription so you only pay for what you've got.

We recommend returning items 4-5 days before your subscription renews in order to allow enough time for delivery and processing to avoid your next monthly payment going out. If you're a few days late, you can always cancel online (use the link in the order confirmation email). As long as we receive the clothes within the next few days, that's fine.

Sustainability

At Borro we maximise the use of each item of clothing by providing a service that ensures it's well maintained, repaired and enjoyed by as many families as possible.

So if a garment is used by 6 different users, the global warming potential is 49% less, with a CO2e (kg) per user of 1.18, instead of 2.29.
