How to Dress Your Baby in Spring

How to Dress Your Baby in Spring

As the weather becomes milder, it can be challenging to know how to dress your baby in this transitional season. With our simple tips, you can ensure that your little one stays comfortable, stylish, and ready to enjoy the season. Here’s a guide on how to dress your baby in spring.

1. Layering is Key

Spring weather can be unpredictable. You may feel like you’ve experienced all seasons in the space of a day (or even an hour!) The best way to cope with transitional spring weather is by (you guessed it)… layering! Young babies cannot regulate their own body temperature, so their clothing (and you) need to help do that job for them. A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby in one more layer than you need.

  • Base Layer: Start with a soft, breathable onesie or bodysuit. Choose cotton or organic fabrics, as these materials are gentle on your baby’s skin and allow air circulation. Borro loves the Milking It onesie from Claude & Co.
  • Mid-Layer: Add a light cardigan, like these signature organic cotton ones from Mori, a sweater, or a long-sleeve shirt on top. These layers can be easily taken off if the temperature rises.
  • Outer Layer: A lightweight jacket or zip-up hoodie is perfect for spring. Choose one with a hood for extra protection against unexpected gusts of wind.

2. Choose Soft, Breathable Fabrics

Look for breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, and linen. These fabrics allow air to flow freely, preventing overheating and ensuring your baby stays cosy.

3. Cover Up Without Overheating

While it's important to protect your baby from sun exposure, especially in spring, you don’t want them to overheat. Keep their sensitive skin safe by using light, breathable hats, and UV-protective clothing.

  • Sun Hat: Choose a hat that shields your baby's face and neck from the sun. Babies tend to throw these off a lot so a chin strap style is ideal for this age.
  • UV Protective Clothing: On warmer days, protect your baby in the pool or during water play with UV protective swimwear. Remember your baby is best off playing in the shade, as suncream isn’t recommended for very little ones.

4. Be Prepared for Those Spring Showers

Spring is notorious for its unpredictable showers. While you can’t always predict when it will rain, it’s a good idea to be prepared with a lightweight, waterproof raincoat, and/ or the pram cover.

If you’re a fan of babywearing, you can invest in a specifically designed waterproof cover (just be sure to keep an eye out for signs of overheating), otherwise an oversized jacket to cover you both, or an umbrella are ideal. A hat or muslin to shield their head is always handy/ particularly if you’re planning for them to nap while you’re out.

5. Stay Cosy with Snuggly Layers

In the early spring months, mornings and evenings can still be chilly. A lightweight pramsuit, pram footmuff, or blanket are ideal, particularly if you outing coincides with naptime. Make sure the fabric is breathable to prevent your baby from getting too warm. Borro loves this 3 in 1 scampsuit, which has you covered for all conditions.

6. Accessories

Keep things simple and comfortable.  while considering safety. Bibs can be cute and practical, especially if your baby is teething or drooling. Soft mittens or sleepsuits with fold over sleeves are ideal to keep little hands warm. Keep their little feet warm in the mornings with socks and booties.

Final Thoughts

By layering clothing and packing a few essentials you can be prepared for whatever the weather throws at you. I often found getting outside for some fresh air helped lift my mood in those sleep particularly deprived months, plus it gives your little one new things to look at.

Our UK weather can be unpredictable, and babies grow so fast. You may find yourself buying the perfect spring puddlesuit, only for it to be worn a handful of times. Save yourself time and money by renting with Borro. Check out our spring checklist for their wardrobe essentials.

What about stains?

Don't panic! Let us worry about the stains. Stain insurance is included. Obviously it's best to prevent stains if you can, or treat them as soon as possible. But we will never charge you.

If the garment can't be saved, it will be upcycled or recycled. Nothing ever goes to landfill, and we'll never charge you.

Subscription & exchanges

Subscription

All the clothes are individually priced and there's no minimum amount or set subscription - we're flexible!

Rent as many/few things as you like and you'll see at checkout what your monthly subscription will be. (If you want us to pick out a coordinated bundle of 10 items for you, it's £29/month).

Exchanges

We know little ones grow as fast as the weather changes! You don't need to return your previous order to order new clothes, so simply send back items whenever you no longer have a need for them, and add any new items to your subscription, by adding them to your basket and checking out.

Delivery & returns

Delivery

Your order will be packed and dispatched the next working day. Delivery takes 2-3 working days.

Returns

Pop them inside the bag/box they came in, attach the free pre-paid returns label, then drop off at your nearest Evri ParcelShop.

We only include one pre-paid returns label per order, so if you choose to send just some of an order back and the rest later, you will need to pay for the postage of the second return.

Once we've received your items we will amend your subscription so you only pay for what you've got.

We recommend returning items 4-5 days before your subscription renews in order to allow enough time for delivery and processing to avoid your next monthly payment going out. If you're a few days late, you can always cancel online (use the link in the order confirmation email). As long as we receive the clothes within the next few days, that's fine.

Sustainability

At Borro we maximise the use of each item of clothing by providing a service that ensures it's well maintained, repaired and enjoyed by as many families as possible.

So if a garment is used by 6 different users, the global warming potential is 49% less, with a CO2e (kg) per user of 1.18, instead of 2.29.
