As the weather becomes milder, it can be challenging to know how to dress your baby in this transitional season. With our simple tips, you can ensure that your little one stays comfortable, stylish, and ready to enjoy the season. Here’s a guide on how to dress your baby in spring.
1. Layering is Key
Spring weather can be unpredictable. You may feel like you’ve experienced all seasons in the space of a day (or even an hour!) The best way to cope with transitional spring weather is by (you guessed it)… layering! Young babies cannot regulate their own body temperature, so their clothing (and you) need to help do that job for them. A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby in one more layer than you need.
- Base Layer: Start with a soft, breathable onesie or bodysuit. Choose cotton or organic fabrics, as these materials are gentle on your baby’s skin and allow air circulation. Borro loves the Milking It onesie from Claude & Co.
- Mid-Layer: Add a light cardigan, like these signature organic cotton ones from Mori, a sweater, or a long-sleeve shirt on top. These layers can be easily taken off if the temperature rises.
- Outer Layer: A lightweight jacket or zip-up hoodie is perfect for spring. Choose one with a hood for extra protection against unexpected gusts of wind.
2. Choose Soft, Breathable Fabrics
Look for breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, and linen. These fabrics allow air to flow freely, preventing overheating and ensuring your baby stays cosy.
3. Cover Up Without Overheating
While it's important to protect your baby from sun exposure, especially in spring, you don’t want them to overheat. Keep their sensitive skin safe by using light, breathable hats, and UV-protective clothing.
- Sun Hat: Choose a hat that shields your baby's face and neck from the sun. Babies tend to throw these off a lot so a chin strap style is ideal for this age.
- UV Protective Clothing: On warmer days, protect your baby in the pool or during water play with UV protective swimwear. Remember your baby is best off playing in the shade, as suncream isn’t recommended for very little ones.
4. Be Prepared for Those Spring Showers
Spring is notorious for its unpredictable showers. While you can’t always predict when it will rain, it’s a good idea to be prepared with a lightweight, waterproof raincoat, and/ or the pram cover.
If you’re a fan of babywearing, you can invest in a specifically designed waterproof cover (just be sure to keep an eye out for signs of overheating), otherwise an oversized jacket to cover you both, or an umbrella are ideal. A hat or muslin to shield their head is always handy/ particularly if you’re planning for them to nap while you’re out.
5. Stay Cosy with Snuggly Layers
In the early spring months, mornings and evenings can still be chilly. A lightweight pramsuit, pram footmuff, or blanket are ideal, particularly if you outing coincides with naptime. Make sure the fabric is breathable to prevent your baby from getting too warm. Borro loves this 3 in 1 scampsuit, which has you covered for all conditions.
6. Accessories
Keep things simple and comfortable. while considering safety. Bibs can be cute and practical, especially if your baby is teething or drooling. Soft mittens or sleepsuits with fold over sleeves are ideal to keep little hands warm. Keep their little feet warm in the mornings with socks and booties.
Final Thoughts
By layering clothing and packing a few essentials you can be prepared for whatever the weather throws at you. I often found getting outside for some fresh air helped lift my mood in those sleep particularly deprived months, plus it gives your little one new things to look at.
