Cloth Nappies: Everything You Need To Know To Get Started

Are you looking for eco-friendly alternatives to disposable nappies? Reusable nappies have many benefits, from saving money to reducing waste and protecting the environment. There are some great reasons why you should use reusable cloth nappies.

However, knowing where to start your cloth nappy journey can be overwhelming. So we have put together this helpful guide on everything you need to know about cloth nappies.

Cloth nappies

Cloth nappies explained

Cloth nappies are a great eco-friendly alternative to disposable nappies. They are made from natural cloth materials including cotton and bamboo. In simple terms your baby wears the nappy, then when it's time to change them you wash the soiled nappy and reuse it.

There are different types of cloth nappies available however they all have the same components. There will be a soft absorbent nappy and a waterproof outer layer. You can also add a nappy liner that will lie next to your baby’s skin. The nappy liner catches poo and makes it easier when changing the nappy.

Cloth nappies are very absorbent and become more absorbent the more you use and wash them. Cloth nappies can be more bulky than disposable nappies, however, they do not prevent your baby from moving, crawling, or walking.

Cloth nappies do require some setup to get started, however, once you have got into the swing of things you will see how they are easier than you first thought.

What do I need to start using cloth nappies?

  • Nappies. You will need a good stash of cloth nappies, 20-25 nappies is a good place to start.
  • Liners. You will need either disposable or reusable liners. Many disposable liners are biodegradable whereas reusable ones are fluffy and soft.
  • Nappy bucket or wet bag. A wet bag or nappy bucket is suitable for storing dirty nappies until you wash them.
  • Wipes. Reusable wipes are a great option, otherwise, you can buy biodegradable wipes.

What are the different types of cloth nappies?

  • All In One: These nappies are similar to disposable nappies. The nappy is one piece and the waterproof layer is attached to the nappy. You wash the entire nappy.
  • Two-Part System: Nappies have two parts, a nappy, and a separate waterproof cover.
  • Pocket Nappy: A pocket nappy is prepared before you change your baby, by placing the nappy inserts into a 'pocket' formed by the waterproof layer and fleece lining.
  • All In Two: An all-in-two nappy has internal absorbent pads with poppers to attach to the waterproof wrap. At change time you remove the wet nappy and attach a new clean nappy to the same waterproof cover.

How do I change a cloth nappy?

The process is straightforward once you have everything you need.

  • Remove the wet nappy from your baby. If you are using a reusable waterproof layer, remove that first and put it to one side.
  • Remove the liner and dispose. If you are using reusable liners, place them in the dirty nappy bag. If they are soiled you may want to dispose of any poo in the toilet - in which case put it to one side to clean off.
  • Place the dirty nappy in the nappy bucket or bag.
  • Clean your baby with reusable wipes and place those in the dirty nappy bucket or bag.
  • Dress your baby with a clean nappy and liner, including the waterproof layer (if it's a two-part).

Cloth nappies should be changed between two to four hours, and immediately if they have pooed. When changing your baby, especially in the morning, be sure to wipe the entire area of the nappy covers and make sure they are fully dry to prevent nappy rash.

How long do cloth nappies last?

Cloth nappies can last a long time as long as you care for them properly. Many nappies are one-size so can be used on newborns all the way until they are potty trained.

As long as you follow the washing instructions for cloth nappies your nappies can be used for years and can even be used for other children.
